Her role as the wife of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything earned her an Oscar nomination in the very first time. Jones was widely praised by critics and fans for her performance in the role of Hawking's former wife. The film was inspired by the life story of Stephen Hawking. Inferno, the Tom Hanks thriller was her following role. Jones received an award called the British Artist of year award in 2016 from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles.
